I have been told that the average appraiser is over 50 years old. That means more appraisers retiring. However with the increase in education requirements these days and the fact that new appraisers have to work for a company as a trainee for several years, it is almost impossible for new appraiser's to get into the business. I remember when I went through my classes, there were other students taking the classes having no idea how they would break into the business.
Now I admit these are challenging times to enter the business but when you think about the number of appraisers that will be retiring and how difficult it is to get in the business, here is some suggestions.
First, Not many companies want to train someone with so little business these days. So first see if you can find your own account, whether it be through your local banks, attorneys or accountants you know, someone who will give you work when you get hired.
Second, try to find a company who will hire you before spending money and taking the classes. Maybe you know someone in the business, a friend or family member.
Third, Learn how the business works, go online to forums and websites about appraising. Talk to people, ask questions.
It's a great business and worth the effort if you can get into it.
